Chestnut Roundup at the Alamance Battleground

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Back in September, Tammy and I went to the Alamance Battleground.

While we were there, we saw a Chinese Chestnut tree, just loaded with nuts. Tammy just loves chestnuts and is the Chestnut Coordinator for the North American Fruit Explorers (NAFEX), so she had been dreaming of collecting the bounty.

So, we headed back to the battleground to harvest the nuts.

When we arrived, we found the ground loaded with chestnuts!

The nuts didn’t look quite right, but we filled our bags to overflowing.

Before we left, we took a better look at the nuts and realized that they none of them had any meat in them! We searched the ground and found a single plump chestnut, full of yummy nut meat. We then realized that this chestnut tree did not have a companion chestnut to fetiliize the nuts. This meant that while there were plenty of nuts on the ground, only a few lucky ones had any meat.
