Let the Grass Grow

Horses Grazing on Fresh Grass

Well, it’s spring and the grass starting to grow like crazy.  The might be the horse’s favorite time of the year — the grass is lush and tender and grows faster than they can eat it.

It’s important during this time of year to make sure that you don’t let your horses get too fat, though.  All of that lush grass can increase their risk of founder.  We make sure to limit the amount of time they have on the choicest grass and confine them to dry lot for much of the day.  Regular exercise (for both the horse and rider) is also helpful.

Preparing for an Endurance Ride

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

A few months ago, Tammy became interested in entering the Sandhills Stampede Endurance Ride.  The ride has two options – a 30 mile “limited distance” and a 55 mile endurance ride.  Since this is our first attempt at a long ride, we entered our horses in the 30 miler.

The ride will be held at the H. Cooper Black Jr. Memorial Field Trial and Recreation Area in Cheraw, SC.   Tammy and I took a trip to the park a few weeks ago to see what it’s like.  The trails are quite nice, although the sand is a bit deep in places.  The camping facilities are great — there are stalls and corrals provided for the horses and a kitchen with refrigerators, stove and microwave for the humans.  There are even dog kennels at the site so you can bring your pup.

Let me know if you’ve ever done the ride or are planning to go!
