Christmas in August

“Riot” pepper plants in their full summer glory

The fruit on our ornamental peppers plants is so bright that the plants look like Christmas trees with colorful, blazing lights. The peppers are truly a joy to behold, especially since the recent heat and drought conditions we’ve had here have caused most of the plants in our yard to become burnt-out and brown. Not so with the peppers, which are ablaze with glorious orange, yellow, purple and red ornaments.

Plans to turn the peppers (which are spicy hot) into purple and orange hot sauces and salsas have been postponed, simply because I can’t stand the thought of removing the beautifult peppers from the plants: it would be like destroying a work of art.

Although I planted three varieties of ornamental pepper plants this year, I don’t have a clear favorite, though I expected to. I admire Numex Twilight for it large, leafy presence and abundant multi-colored fruit. Riot is notable for the sheer number of colorful peppers it produces on its diminutive frame, and Prairie Fire wins the prize for reminding me the most of a Christmas tree, all lit up in yellow, orange and red.

Pony and Daisy Get a Visit From the Vet

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

Today, the ponies got their fall shots: they got vaccinated against Western and Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis, West Nile disease, influenza and “rhino” (Rhinopneumonitis–a disease which usually only causes cold-like symptoms, but can cause serious side effects as well). The ponies were very well behaved for the vet, and stood still for their shots and the flu/rhino vaccine, which is an intranasal one that gets squirted up their nose.

This evening, the ponies seem a little wiped out, and are a bit swollen and sore from the shots, which makes them walk slowly and deliberately. However, they’re still out in their pasture happily eating mouthful after mouthful of grass, which helps me feel slightly less guilty about being the indirect cause of their discomfort.

Next spring (February, actually) the ponies will get their “spring shots” which include tetanus and rabies shots. Until then, an apple a day will hopefully keep the vet away!

Still Life With Eggplant

Eggplant and Peppers About to Become DinnerThese Eggplants, peppers and tomatoes are about to become dinner!

The summer garden is in full swing, producing more tomatoes, peppers and eggplants than we can handle. This year, we are doing a pretty decent job keeping up with the bounty: we’ve succeeded in eating or canning a large percentage of the garden produce (hundreds of pounds worth so far).

Almost every meal we’ve eaten lately has featured fresh peppers or tomatoes, which are delicious grilled as well as in sauces, casseroles (enchiladas are a favorite), and cooked into omelets or scrambled eggs.

Not only is our organic garden produce abundant, fresh and delicious, it’s pretty to look at too!
